Appalachian Senior Programs (ASP) is a volunteer driven organization primarily funded by AmeriCorps Seniors which provides companionship, guidance and assistance to children and older adults in the local area through two different grant-funded programs; the Foster Grandparent program and the Senior Companion program.
The aging process is a dynamic and continuous process. Sometimes it can be overwhelming and stressful, and it can also be an exciting experience. Throughout all steps of life, companionship and assistance are needed for guidance. Our senior volunteers help provide this guidance to our most vulnerable community members.
Appalachian Senior Programs houses two specific programs that assist children and the local senior population; the Foster Grandparent and the Senior Companion programs. The goal of these programs is to enhance the social-emotional and academic skills of children who need one-on-one assistance, and provide companionship and assistance for older adults who do not qualify for other assistance in the local area. Appalachian Senior Programs serves the five county areas of Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Watauga, and Wilkes counties.
Appalachian Senior Programs consists of volunteers, ages fifty-five and older, who recognize the importance of giving to those in need and sharing their time and skills. Senior volunteers who meet eligibility requirements may also qualify for a modest $4.00 per hour stipend, and meal and travel reimbursement. These funds are supplemental income and do not affect receiving other government benefits such as social security, veterans benefits, disability, etc.
Who we are
Appalachian Senior Programs is a volunteer based organization which works diligently in five North Carolina counties (Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Watauga, and Wilkes) to support our community through two federally and locally funded grant programs.
History
Appalachian Senior Programs has worked diligently for many years to serve the surrounding communities through two volunteer based programs; the Foster Grandparent Parent program and the Senior Companion program. The Foster Grandparent program has been assisting children in five North Carolina counties (Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Watauga, and Wilkes) since 1980. The Senior Companion program was added eight years later to assist older adults in the same five North Carolina counties.
