Aging can be a challenging process, and most individuals want to retain their sense of independence and remain in their own homes as long as possible. While some older adults qualify for in-home services, many in the High Country do not. As a senior companion volunteer, you may help other adults maintain independence by providing companionship and assistance. Your presence and conversation can limit feelings of loneliness and isolation while improving self-esteem, and provide respite to caregivers. By providing one-on-one assistance to these individuals they can remain at home.
Being a volunteer is an enriching experience. Some volunteers also qualify for a small stipend to supplement their income. Because volunteers will be working with other seniors, specific requirements must be met before being approved to be a volunteer. These requirements are provided below. You will most likely be paired with an individual who shares similar interests. If you are interested in volunteering as a senior companion, please see the requirements below. Senior Companion volunteers who qualify may also receive a modest $4.00 an hour stipend and meal and travel reimbursement. These funds do not affect any government benefits such as social security, veterans benefits, disability, etc.
Throughout the application and review process you will be in touch with the Senior Companion Program Director, Debbie Wellborn and Program Assistant Gloria Goodman. Feel free to contact these individuals to gain more information on the specific steps of becoming a Senior Companion volunteer. If interested in becoming a volunteer please fill out the google form which is located at the bottom of this page. Once reviewed, you will be contacted through email on the next steps of the application process.
